Do You Believe in Your Goals! Do You Believe in Yourself?

I was reading an article written by one of my mentors, Paul Martinelli, where he suggested that “we get what we believe.” I thought that was interesting and wanted to know more.

He talked about how we can have goals, we can know why we should pursue these goals, we can know precisely how to achieve these goals, we may have all the resources needed to achieve the goals, and yet we don’t.

This is so true, and I can point to so many times this has happened to me over the years. How about you? How many of us have made the decision, set the goal or intention to get in better physical shape (just one example)? We know our “why” – we want to be healthier. We may have a particular goal to look a certain way for a certain event. We research the best way to get fit. We know the latest fitness trends. We develop a plan. We buy a gym membership or some kind of equipment. And we begin, and we may even be diligent for the first month or so. And then something happens…and we stop.

The treadmill becomes an expensive clothes hanger, or the gym membership continues without us. And while we can find ways to explain this to ourselves, there is a part of us that recognizes that familiar sense of disappointment in ourselves. But there is also a part of us that is not surprised. In fact, we may be relieved because we have gone back into our comfort zone. That place where we know we are safe, where we know who we are and we don’t have to try.

So, what is going on here? Well, the comfort zone is, as its name suggests, comfortable. We don’t have to challenge our beliefs about who we are. In our comfort zone, we know who we are. We might not like who we are, and we might want to change, but that alone is not enough for us to be able to really change.

Meaningful change requires that we believe that we can be “more" or different than the person we are in our comfort zone. Just wanting to be more or different isn’t enough. We need to believe it. We need to believe we are worthy, and we need to believe we can be the person we want to be, rather than the person we are.

This takes courage! It takes consistency, perseverance, and tenacity! And it takes work! Belief without work or action does not get you anywhere.

So, what do you believe about yourself? Do you believe that you are worthy and capable of becoming more? I believe you are!
