Ten Ways to Overcome Self-Doubt and Fear

February 18, 2019

Fear and self-doubt are crippling. It’s not easy to enjoy life, or achieve great things, when you’re afraid, or doubt your capabilities. It may seem easier to find excuses to avoid situations triggering these emotions, but that is a limiting approach to life.

The best things in life lie on the other side of fear and doubt!

Banish fear and self-doubt with these strategies:

  1. Tackle smaller fears first. The way to become good at handling big fears is to first tackle smaller fears. Force yourself to do small, slightly uncomfortable things. They'll become easier the next time. Then move on to more moderate fears, and force yourself to do those too.

    • Prove to yourself you can overcome your fears. Believe you can do anything.

  2. Examine the source of your self-doubt. Why do you have self-doubt? What is the source? Is it valid? When you take this logical approach perhaps you’ll realize you in fact have no reason to doubt yourself.

  3. Stay in the present. When we look into the future, we often worry about events and circumstances that do not yet exist. We create mental images that make us assume the worst. Stay in the present.

  4. Ask yourself, “What’s the worst that can happen?” Consider the worst outcome. How bad would it really be? What is the best way to respond?

    • Put a contingency plan in place. It will reduce your stress and fear.

  5. Breathe. Sometimes the best option is to simply breathe. Slow, deep breaths help calm your physiology and reduce "fight or flight" response.

  6. You aren't perfect. Perfection is unattainable. The pursuit of perfection creates anxiety. You'll experience self-doubt, if perfection is your goal. Be realistic.

    • You don’t always have to be right or successful to enjoy an amazing life!

  7. Realize everyone has fears. You're not alone. The truth is, fear can be a motivator. If you are realistic about it, it can drive you to success, and give you an advantage over those who can't control their fears.

  8. Act as if you are courageous. Visualize how you would stand, think, breathe, and act, if you were the bravest person on earth. Adopt that posture and those thoughts, and you will become courageous.

  9. Picture success. Visualize yourself succeeding. The more times you imagine yourself being successful, the less fear you'll feel, and the more your confidence will grow.

  10. Take action. Action overcomes fears! Your dread will shrink in the face of activity. Sometimes, getting started is the hardest part.

How much do fear and self-doubt control your decisions? How much more could you accomplish if you overcame these emotions? Do not surrender! Refuse to allow self-doubt to limit your life!
