Sometimes we think about a goal as being like a compass, but I think a goal is more like a map. The original thought or desire that we begin with, may be the compass pointing us in the general direction, but when the thought becomes a goal, then we have a destination in mind. And then we can create a map to get there. Every journey requires a destination. So what turns a thought into a goal? Clarity!
Clarity requires taking the time to write detailed instructions for yourself. And having these instructions means you have a better chance at success. Not only will you know exactly what must be done, but your plans will fire you with enthusiasm, determination, and clarity.
Tips to help you develop clarity and turn your ideas into real goals:
Figure out your ultimate goal. What, exactly, do you want? If we use the map analogy, this would be the destination.
Break up your goals. When you stare at the ultimate goal or destination, it may seem intimidating and unattainable. It's important to break up your main goal into smaller, more manageable goals. Write out detailed plans of how you'll reach each of the smaller goals.
For example, if you want to start your own business, a small goal would be to research your local and federal business laws, and to register a name.
Make alternate plans. Sometimes you won't be able to meet the deadline you set, or maybe you're unable to completely follow through with a plan. It's then important have alternatives in place. If you already have back up plans, you'll save time if when you run into snags. But don’t lose sight of your goal or destination.
Being organized is important, so find a system that works for you that can help you stay on course, meet deadlines, and track your progress.
As with any journey, you will encounter challenges; you may have to make some detours; your plans may get derailed, and you will need to be flexible. But the greater your clarity and the more clearly you can see or visual your goal or destination, the greater your chances of success.
Enjoy your journey to success!
